Podcasts for Gents: Tribe of Mentors and Jocko Podcast

As the end of the year beckons, it's helpful to take stock of what went well in the past year and what needs to be improved in the coming year.  One of these podcasts will offer advice in short form (15-30 minute episodes) and the other in very long form (2-4 hours).  Both will help you elevate your game in the new year.

Tribe of Mentors

A little over a year since his most recent book, Tools of Titans hit, Tim Ferriss is at it again, this time with the similarly sized Tribe of Mentors.  The concept is simple.  Ask world-class performers specific questions that can help the rest of us gain insight into winning mindsets, routines, and strategies.  Tim asks the same 11 questions of each guest and in the accompanying podcast that launched at the same time as the book, you'll hear their answers.  Some of the questions include:

  • How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success?  Do you have a "favorite failure" of yours?
  • If you could have a gigantic billboard anywhere with anything on it - what would it say and why?
  • What is one of the best or most worthwhile investments you've ever made?
  • In the last five years, what new belief, behavior, or habit has most improved your life?

Answering these questions are a bevy of people who are wildly successful, not necessarily celebrity-level famous.  There are plenty of the latter, however, including Gretchen Rubin, Craig Newmark, Marie Forleo, Neil Gaiman, Tony Hawk, Eric Ripert, and Gary Vaynerchuk.  A helpful exercise for each of us as we listen to these high value individuals share their answers is to answer the questions ourselves.  Tony Robbins says that the quality of our life is determined by the quality of our questions, and this show gets at the heart of that idea.

Jocko Podcast

Jocko Willink, who we have discussed previously, was in a way, "launched" by Tim Ferriss on his flagship The Tim Ferriss Show, which features long form interviews.  The audience really connected with Jocko and it wasn't too long before he started his own podcast (he also appears in Tribe of Mentors, unsurprisingly).

Jocko's pod is all about having long conversations about discipline and leadership as it applies to business, relationships, everyday life, and of course, war (you wouldn't expect any less from a Navy Seal).  He is deliberate and thoughtful in his discussions and they are very much long form (Jocko's interview with Dr. Jordan Peterson was almost 4 hours, and his recent interview with Tim Ferriss was over 4 hours).

His intentionality, thoughtful questions, and great guests are all part of what make Jocko Podcast a worthy addition to your podcast lineup.
