It’s August, and although summer is coming to a close, that doesn’t mean vacation season is over just yet. Rather than spending your last warm-weather trip heading to the same place you always visit, why not consider these four not-so-common vacation destinations.
1. Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. Central Idaho might not be the first place that comes to mind when you’re considering a vacation, but the Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve is actually pretty wonderful. The preserve spans an area about the size of Rhode Island and boasts a rugged landscape shaped by thousand-year-old crusted lava. Adventurous hikers can enjoy large stretches of seldom-traveled back cou

2. The White River in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Eureka Springs is a great place to relax and enjoy nature. There is plenty to do including swimming, boating and fishing, and the surrounding woods are perfect for hiking and exploring. You can stay at The White River Cabins, set on the rock ledges above the White River overlooking the valley, and with a view of the mountains. Open year round, there are a dozen private cabins to choose from. All cabins include a fully functional kitchen and a private porch. 3. Sandusky, Ohio. As a Michigan native, recommending an Ohio vacation almost feels…dirty. But, truth be told, we enjoyed many summer vacations to Sandusky when I was growing up. The big draw: Cedar Point Amusement Park. Sure, Sandusky boasts over 22 miles of shoreline within its city limits, but let’s be honest – no one goes there for the beach. There are 16 roller coasters in the park, plus thrill rides, water rides, family rides and kids’ rides. Not to mention Soak City, Cedar Point’s water park counterpart. 4. Halifax, Nova Scotia. The eastern province of Canada, Nova Scotia is a great vacation spot for couples and families alike. Home to fresh, delicious lobster, along with excellent shopping and a number of summer festivals, Halifax is a fun town with plenty to do. For outdoor activities, you can take a kayak tour, visit Peggy’s Cove lighthouse and pier, or head out on a whale watching boat for the afternoon.
